Employment Law

The Employment Standards Act (ESA) is a law in Ontario that protects the rights of workers.  This law outlines the standards for employers to treat their workers fairly.  The ESA protects most workers in Ontario. However, it does not apply to workers in federally regulated industries, such as banks and transportation.

The ESA has rules that employers must follow. The ESA outlines the rights and responsibilities of employers.  For example:
- The hours you work
- What the minimum wage is, and being paid for
   overtime.
- How much vacation time do you get, and when
   do you get vacation pay?
- Your rights to public holidays.
- Your sick days and personal emergency leave
- Parental and pregnancy leave.
- Family medical leave,
- Family caregiver leave.
- Crime-related child death or disappearance leave
- Critical ill childcare leave.
- Termination or severance pay.
- Filing of a claim.
- Health and Safety rights.
- Free from discrimination rights.
